ATLANTA – The final numbers are out, and it is little surprise that the St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team again ranks among the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25.
For the third straight year, the Bonnies scored one of the top 25 cumulative team GPAs in the nation, ranking 18th overall among all Division I programs for the 2016-17 academic year. St. Bonaventure recorded a 3.527 cumulative GPA last year.
"We would like to thank (Academic Coordinator for men's and women's basketball) Joel Rosencrance, (Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support and Student Services) Heather McDivitt and the entire SBU faculty for their hard work and support in service of our team," St. Bonaventure head coach Jesse Fleming said. "Our young women have made a commitment to upholding our standard of dominating in the classroom. Our goal every year is to do our best in the classroom, on the floor and in the community and we will always make academics the cornerstone of our program. This recognition by the WBCA helps to recognize our young women for their hard work and I'm very happy for them."
The Bonnies recorded the best cumulative GPA for any women's basketball team in the Atlantic 10 and were the only A-10 program to crack the top 25.
Success in the classroom is nothing new for the program – in addition to being in the top 25 the past three years (seventh in 2015-16 and 23rd in 2014-15), St. Bonaventure has ranked inside the top 25 10 times since 2002-03.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season.
