ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Four players reached double figure scoring as the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team knocked off Albany, 67-59, Sunday afternoon in a battle of 2016 NCAA Tournament teams at the Reilly Center.
Mariah Ruff paced the Bonnies with 16 points, also handing out six of the team's 17 assists. Both Jalisha Terry and Mckenna Maycock finished with 13 points apiece and Gabby Richmond tacked on 11 points with six rebounds.
"Start to finish we played with a really tough effort level," head coach Jesse Fleming said. "We talked about how we would respond after last week and how we had to take accountability to make ourselves better. We had three excellent practices this week and it really showed on the court today."
The Bonnies spread the wealth on Sunday as eight players worked into the scoring column while limiting the Great Danes on the defensive end.
St. Bonaventure (5-6) took a 38-27 lead to halftime and led for nearly 37 minutes of game time against the reigning America East champions who are the favorites to retain their crown.
Albany (6-6) closed to a 38-30 score just over a minute and a half into the second half, but soon the Bona lead was back to 14 following a three from Ruff and buckets by Richmond and Sarah Hart.
The Bonnies' lead did not drop below double digits until the 8:21 mark of the fourth, and following a jumper and free throws from Imani Tate, the Great Danes closed to a 53-46 margin with 7:04 to play.
Maycock delivered a layup before Terry drained a three to push the lead back to 59-48, but Albany made one final push. Jessica Fequiere hit from long range to close to a 61-55 score before Tate saw a jumper roll around the rim and out with Ruff hauling in the defensive rebound, then drawing a foul to get to the line for a pair of free throws and an eight-point edge.
Albany got within 64-59 with 36 seconds to play after two shots at the line from Tate, but Terry iced the game away with free throws to seal the win.
The Bonnies shot a season-best 50 percent from the floor (23-for-46) while holding Albany to 35 percent (22-63). Bona also forced the Great Danes into 19 turnovers.
Next up for the Bonnies is a trip to Buffalo to face the rival Bulls on Wednesday afternoon with tip off slated for noon.
