ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Bucknell, 57-35, Tuesday night at the Reilly Center.
"We just played a really good team," said head coach Jesse Fleming of the Patriot League favorites. "I thought we defended well again, and we just have to keep working and building the confidence of our players."
The two teams traded buckets out of the gate, but a 10-2 run to close out the first period made it 14-6 in favor of Bucknell.
The Bonnies then responded and outscored the Bison, 10-9, in the second period as the two teams went into the break with a 23-16 lead in favor of Bucknell. Ruff caught fire in the period as she scored all 10 of the Bonnies' points. Two three pointers in the half and four free throws totaled her scoring.
St. Bonaventure stayed hot in the beginning of the half and scored the first five points of the third period, cutting the deficit two points, 23-21. Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Jalisha Terry responded to a Bucknell layup with two free throws to keep the two-point lead, but four three-pointers in the following four minutes helped Bucknell extend its lead and finish the quarter up, 39-29.
Bucknell then started the fourth period on a 7-0 run and eventually outscored the Bonnies, 18-6, in the period to complete he victory.
Britvar scored four of her eight second-half points on two jumpers down the stretch.
"Matea was ready to shoot all game, and we needed that," said Fleming. "We love having Mariah and Matea in double-figures. I really liked Matea's approach, especially in the second half."
The Bonnies will hit the road for a pair of games, first at Eastern Michigan on Friday at 11:00 a.m., then followed by a matchup at Toledo on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
