ORLANDO – The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and just as it had done a day before, weathered the storm of multiple runs from its opponent to score a 60-47 victory over Rider on Sunday afternoon at CFE Arena on the campus of Central Florida.
St. Bonaventure (3-3) did not trail for a single second of its two games at the UCF Thanksgiving Classic and evens its overall record on the year while Rider falls to 3-2.
The Bonnies, who defeated Austin Peay on Saturday, spread the wealth Sunday with several players figuring prominently in the victory. Junior Mariah Ruff again led the team with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting while freshman Jalisha Terry broke her career high in scoring set just a day prior as she finished with 14 points. Sophomore Mckenna Maycock offered a big spark off the bench, pouring in 10 points along with five rebounds.
The Brown and White employed a quick start and a 10-2 run ending the third quarter to take control, then seize it back.
Just as they had 24 hours before, the Bonnies started fast. Bona scored the game's first seven points, and led 17-6 following a floater from Jalisha Terry with 1:53 left in the period.
Rider came alive, however, and used a 12-4 run to end the first half to close within a 25-23 score at intermission. Foul trouble was partially to blame for the run – Gabby Richmond was forced to the bench with two fouls three minutes into the first while Sarah Hart also picked up her third before the break.
Rider remained within a bucket at 31-29 with 4:04 left in the third, but the Bonnies finished the period on a 10-2 sprint for a 41-31 lead entering the fourth. A three-ball from Ruff and back-to-back strong possessions from Maycock keyed the run – the second-year guard converted on an and-one, then drew another foul on the next trip down the floor, sinking a pair of free throws at the end of the third.
The Bonnies led, 44-31, with 8:35 to play following a traditional three-point play from Ruff, but Rider would have another run left. The Broncs pulled to a 53-46 score with 2:49 remaining following free throws by Julia Duggan, but Maycock again answered with another drive to the basket. Terry followed a defensive stop with a free throw to extend the lead back to 56-46. Rider never threatened the rest of the way.
Rider shot just 25.8 percent from the floor (16-62) against the Bonnies defense. Duggan paced the Broncs with 18 points.
Next up for the Bonnies is a return to The Reilly Center where they will play host to Stony Brook Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. That contest will be the first of a doubleheader with the Bona men who will take on Siena at 8 p.m. that night in the only regular season doubleheader of the year at The RC. Tickets start at $9 and are good for both contests. For ticket information, visit GoBonnies.com/Tickets or call 716-375-2500.
