Griffs Halt Bonnies' Home Winning Streak, 74-57

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -  Gabby Richmond registered her second double-double in three games, totaling 20 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as rival Canisius got by the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team, 74-57, at the Reilly Center Wednesday night.

Mariah Ruff added 14 points while Sarah Hart posted nine points and Mckenna Maycock matched her career high of eight rebounds.

"Canisius struggled in their first game, but when they get that motion going they can all post-up, they can all shoot it," St. Bonaventure head coach Jesse Fleming said. "Once that motion gets going they have many players who can do a lot of good things. We got down early and from there we were in trouble."

Canisius (1-1) seized control with a 17-2 run spanning the first and second quarters and took a 32-18 lead to intermission, but the Bonnies fought back. Bona drew to within six late in the third quarter behind the strong play of Richmond along with Ruff.

Ruff sat for over half of the first two quarters after picking up her second foul with just under three minutes left in the first quarter. She made up for lost time in the third, however, scoring 12 points during the quarter as the Bonnies pulled within six at 44-38 with 57 seconds left in the third period.

"We have to figure out a way to get one more person off of our bench going," Fleming said. "(Ruff) is someone we expect to come in and score and when we were missing her for much of the first half we struggled."

A three from Canisius' Maria Welch just before the buzzer put a halt to the Bonnies momentum, however.

St. Bonaventure (1-2) had one last push remaining as Richmond worked underneath for a bucket and a five-point spread, 47-42, a minute into the fourth.

Back-to-back threes from Welch and Saliah Serrette crushed Bona's run, though. From there Bona would get no closer than six – following a trey from Hart at the 7:32 mark which made it a 53-47 score, but Canisius again had an answer as Margret Halfdanardottir drained another of Canisius' 10 threes.

"We punched back a bit, but we gave them back-to-back open threes and that was disheartening," Fleming said.

The Golden Griffs, who scored their first win in the Reilly Center since 2005, had five players in double figures led by Lauren D'Hont's 15 points.

Bona held a 41-40 edge on the boards – Matea Britvar also had nine rebounds. The Bonnies struggled from the floor, however, shooting 35 percent (21-for-60) while the Griffs shot at a 43.9 percent clip (29-66).

The Bonnies get back to work Saturday at Delaware with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m.
