NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Eight games at the Reilly Center, including four against postseason teams from last season, highlight the 2016-17 St. Bonaventure University women's basketball Atlantic 10 schedule as released by conference officials Wednesday.
As the Atlantic 10 previously announced, the 16-game schedule will see the Bonnies compete in home-and-home contests with Duquesne, Fordham and Saint Louis.
New this year, the A-10 slate begins before the turn of the calendar year as the Bonnies will host Rhode Island on Dec. 28 inside The RC. Bona has won its last eight games against the Rams including last year's road date.
Bona will travel for New Year's Eve, heading to Virginia to face George Mason in just the fourth-ever meeting between squads.
As the calendar flips to 2017 the Bonnies return home to face perennial A-10 power and 2016 WNIT entrant Dayton for a Jan. 4 date.
The only back-to-back road game swing comes in early January as the Bonnies will travel south to play at Richmond on Jan. 7 before going west to play at Saint Louis, another WNIT team from a year ago, on Jan. 11. The Saint Louis game will be broadcast live nationally by NBC Sports Network.
The first of two dates with Fordham comes at home Jan. 15 on a Sunday before a long trip to Massachusetts on Jan. 19.
St. Bonaventure will then host a pair of home games – first on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Duquesne, one of three A-10 teams to reach the NCAA Tournament last year, as well as against Davidson on Jan. 25. The road game on Jan. 29 at Saint Joseph's will also have a national TV audience on the American Sports Network.
Bona hits the road again for the second game of the season vs. Fordham, making the trip to historic Rose Hill Gym on Feb. 4. La Salle (Feb. 7) and Saint Louis (Feb. 11) then will each visit the Reilly Center.
Another date with an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago awaits Bona with a Feb. 15 trip to the nation's capital to face George Washington, who the Bonnies defeated last year in overtime at home.
The home schedule concludes by hosting VCU, which reached last year's WNIT, on Saturday, Feb. 18 and the A-10 slate comes to a close with a road game at Duquesne on Feb. 21.
Bona will enter a new era this season, its first under head coach Jesse Fleming. Six players return from last year's NCAA Tournament squad that finished the season 24-8. Junior guard Mariah Ruff leads the way after averaging 10.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists last year. Also back are seniors Gabby Richmond and Imani Outlaw; junior Matea Britvar and sophomores Mckenna Maycock and Keely Fresh.
A-10 teams will be vying for positioning in the newly refigured conference tournament this season. The 2017 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship will see six first-round games played on campus sites Feb. 25-26 before heading to Richmond for quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game March 3-5. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 in the first round.
