NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure rising junior Darion Gregory has earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team for his work athletically and in the classroom.
Gregory, a native of Smethport, Pa., owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA as an environmental studies major. He is also a member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
He is one of eight conference runners honored on the All-Academic Team, joining Brandon Hall (Fordham), Thomas Amabile (George Mason), Patt Castellano (GW), Matt Bridger (La Salle), Luke Jaciw-Zurakowsky (La Salle), Peter Borger (Richmond) and Matthew Scarpill (Saint Joseph's). Student-athletes are nominated and voted on by the Atlantic 10's sports information directors. To be nominated, runners must have a GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) for their entire academic career.
In an exhibition race this fall, Gregory set what would stand as the program record 5K time of 15:40 and he also ranks 12th individually in program history for 8K times with a mark of 26:52.8 set in 2019 at the Louisville Classic. Among top 10K times in SBU history, Gregory ranks seventh with an effort of 33:15.8 set at the NCAA Northeast Regionals during his freshman campaign.
This season, he paced the Bonnies at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships with a time of 26:48.5 at the five-mile course at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. As a freshman in 2019, he ran in every event and finished in the team's top seven in each competition.
Gregory becomes the first St. Bonaventure men's cross country student-athlete to earn an Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team nod since Jonathan Siuta in 1997. A tie in this year's voting resulted in the team expanding from six to eight athletes.
