Bonnies Take Team Victory at Race in the Park

FAIRVIEW, Pa. – Morning rains made for a difficult and sloppy course at Pleasant Ridge Park, but the St. Bonaventure men's cross country team best battled the conditions on the way to the team victory at the Race in the Park Saturday morning.

The Bonnies took the team crown with 35 points, just nipping host Gannon's 38. Mercyhurst registered 59 points for third while Glenville State (108) and Bethany (133) were fourth and fifth.

Junior William Delaney again was at the head of the pack for the Bonnies, finishing second individually in a field of 51 runners as he ran the 8K course in a time of 28:10.3, behind only Gannon's Joseph Westrick who won the race at 27:27.6.

In all, the Bonnies took five of the top 11 finishers.

Senior George Laraia had his highest finish on the team this fall as he was second on the squad and sixth overall across the finish line at 29:28.3. Sophomore Nathan Prisella was close behind, finishing seventh with a mark of 29:38.2.

Two more underclassmen helped the Bonnies to victory – freshman Logan Caruso was ninth (29:47.4) and sophomore Ryan Chmiel (29:53.8) took 11th spot.

Luke Gobel (31:21.5) and Ryan Signorino (31:24.9) rounded out the top seven for the Brown and White.

"We knew it wasn't going to be a race for PRs. The emphasis was put on placement to win," Bonnies head coach Bob MacFarlane said. "The course was very challenging with hills and a lot of mud because of the rain. The conditions left the course very slippery, causing many runners to fall during the race. Most importantly it was mentally challenging and our guys stepped up big."

St. Bonaventure returns to action next weekend at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday morning.
