BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure men's cross country team finished in 41st place out of 46 scoring teams in the Brown Race of the 40th Annual Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.

The Bonnies scored 1038 points, defeating Mansfield University (1051 points), Mount St. Mary's University (1053 points), Misericordia (1095 points), Bloomsburg University (1193 points) and Niagara University (1213 points). The men had never finished above last place in the Brown Race before Saturday.

Princeton University won the Brown Race with 94 points. Monmouth University junior Khari Bowen won the individual title with a time of 25:03.

The men's and women's teams battled unseasonable heat, with Saturday's temperatures reaching the low 80s by the 12:15 p.m. start of the men's race.

"By the time (the race) started around noontime, you could really start feeling the heat," Macfarlane said. "But they fared very well and this shows you they are hydrating, eating right and doing their workouts like they should be."

Junior Nick Masiello led the Bonnies in 145th place out of 372 runners overall, crossing the line at 27:28. Sophomore Joe Ferencik finished twelve seconds behind Masiello at 27:40, finishing in 167th place overall and scoring 165 points. Junior Harley Thompson clocked in at 28:15, finishing in 224th place and scoring 212 points.

Sophomore Nick Konotopskyj had his highest team finish this season as Bona's fourth runner with a time of 28:54, finishing in 279th place and scoring 255 points. Macfarlane said he enjoys how Konotopskyj has progressively improved each race this season.

"That's the Kono that I know," Macfarlane said. "It was a good confidence builder for him and now he knows that he can get better."

Sophomore Kevin Sidoran finished in 285th place, scoring 261 points with a time of 28:59. Sophomore Caleb Lecker was the sixth St. Bona runner, finishing in 300th place with a time of 29:10.

Junior Steven Kibbe finished in 319th place overall with a time of 29:39. Senior Chris Spiker finished seven seconds behind Kibbe, crossing the line in 327th place at 29:46.

Coach Macfarlane said the men as a whole have gotten faster in two seasons, improving from just two runners (Masiello, 27:58; Kibbe, 29:11) finishing under 30 minutes at the Brown Race in 2011.

"We are not the bottom of the barrel anymore and we'll just keep moving forward," Macfarlane said.

Junior Matt Trifoso finished in 363rd place with a time of 31:00. Junior Dan Myers finished in 370th place with a time of 33:01.

In the men's open race, senior captain Terence Petty finished 430th out of 516 runners, clocking in at 30:55. Petty's time would have placed him ninth out of Bonaventure runners and 361st overall in the Brown Race.

Junior Nick Taylor finished in 441st place with a time of 31:14. Senior Peter Eller finished in 509th place with a time of 36:20.

The Bonnies have a week off before their final regular season meet on Oct. 19 at the Canisius Alumni Classic at Delaware Park in Buffalo, N.Y. The Brown and White raced a 5k in the Little Three Invitational at Delaware Park on Aug. 30.
