NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior Nick Masiello and sophomore Joe Ferencik placed 60th and 62nd among Division I runners, leading the St. Bonaventure men's cross country team at the National Catholic Championships at the University of Notre Dame on Friday.
The Bonnies finished tenth out of ten Division I scoring teams at the championships, scoring 309 points. The championship's scoring format changed this year with separate scoring for Division I and non-Division I schools. Notre Dame won the championships with 20 points and Loyola University Chicago junior Sam Penzenstadler won the individual title with a time of 24:55.4.
Masiello paced the Brown and White on the damp course, scoring 53 points with a time of 27:27.2. Ferencik finished less than seven seconds later, crossing the line at 27:33.5. Junior Harley Thompson finished third for Bona's and 81st place in the Division I race with a time of 28:39.4.
Sophomore Kevin Sidoran finished in 83rd place in the Division I race, clocking in at 28:47.6. Sophomore Caleb Lecker cracked the Bonaventure top five for the first time this season, finishing in 85th place in the Division I race with a time of 28:53.3. Junior Steven Kibbe finished right behind Lecker in 86th place in the Division I race, crossing the line at 29:05.8.
Sophomore Nick Konotopskyj rounded out the SBU top seven, finishing in 88th place in the Division I race with a time of 29:38.1. Senior Chris Spiker finished in 89th place in the Division I race, clocking in at 29:51.3. Freshman Ben Collins battled illness, finishing in 91st place in the Division I race with a time of 31:34.1.
Junior Matt Trifoso finished in 46th place in the JV race, crossing the line at 29:29. Trifoso's time would have placed him in 88th place in the Division I race and seventh among St. Bona runners.
Junior Dan Myers and senior captain Terence Petty finished together in 54th and 55th places in the JV race. Myers finished at 30:12, with Petty close behind at 30:14. Junior Nick Taylor finished in 67th place with a time of 31:58. Senior Peter Eller finished in 70th place with a time of 34:22.
The Bonnies will have a week off before racing at the 2013 Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 5. SBU will race the top ten runners in the Brown Race, which starts at 12:15 p.m. The rest of the team will run in the Open Men's Race at 10:10 a.m.
