ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men's tennis team begins the 2021 spring season Sunday, Feb. 7 at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center against Atlantic 10 vs. Duquesne – the first action for the Bonnies in 11 months. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
St. Bonaventure is coached by Mike Bates who is in his 24th season at the helm of the St. Bonaventure tennis program. The Bonnies return five players from last year's roster and welcome five newcomers.
This year's roster features two seniors, Joseph Blakeley and Jonni Heikkila. Blakeley returned from injury last season and won three singles matches in the Bonnies' shortened season. Heikkila also tallied three singles wins for the Brown and White last season.
Also returning for Bona's this season are junior Martin Estevarena and Marco Rivolo. Estevarena played at the top spot in the lineup for the second straight season last year, accumulating seven singles wins while Rivolo led the Bonnies with eight singles wins and six doubles wins. Sophomore Filip Morawski also returns to the Bonnies for the 2021 spring season.
Flores joins the Bonnies from Pleasanton, Ca. and was ranked in the top-20 in Northern California singles and doubles rankings. Marrero hails from Bayamon, Puerto Rico and is a biology major while Paardekooper travels from the Netherlands to play for the Bonnies.
Nguyen joins the program from Franklin, Wis., where he earned second place in the top doubles flight of his conference tournament. Sanchez comes to the Bonnies from Spain, and is majoring in international studies.
This year's schedule is slated for 10 matches, highlighted by five matches at the SBU Fitness Center.
