Men's Tennis Dominates on First Day of SBU Fall Classic

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team had a strong start in its Fall Classic Saturday. After play was moved inside to the SBU Fitness Center due to early morning rain, the Bonnies were able to play outdoors under sunny skies at the SBU outdoor courts in the afternoon.

The Brown and White started Saturday with a clean sweep of the six singles matches against Pitt-Bradford indoors. The winning ways started with Hector Martinez and Mitchell McGuirt winning their matches, both with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

Lukas Linden Malmberg made his season debut for the Bonnies by winning his number three singles match 6-0, 6-0.

John Rutkowski, Darrel Harxhi, and Logan Cross all would win their matches 6-0, 6-0.

In the afternoon St. Bonaventure squared off against Niagara outdoors as the skies cleared. The Bonnies would win three out of the four doubles matches and five out of seven singles matches against the Purple Eagles.

Martinez and Guillermo Garcia defeated Lukas Wenninger and Brent Boleslav, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Rutkowski and McGuirt would defeat Josh Wilson and Chris Grossi, 6-4. Also winning by a score of 6-4 were Haxrhi and Cross as they were victorious against Niagara's Jason Wisely and Shane Srinivasan.

Indra Patwardhan, Malmberg, Garcia, McGuirt, and Haxhri were all winners in singles as well against Niagara.

Patwardhan grabbed a win from Wilson 6-0, 6-1. Malmberg defeated Boleslav 6-3, 6-4 and McGuirt won by a score of 6-4, 6-1 over Srinivasan.

Harxhi captured his third win of the day against Grossi 6-3, 6-2. Garcia would play in a three set thriller, winning 6-7, 6-1, 12-10 over Wenninger.

St. Bonaventure Fall Classic play is slated to continue on Sunday with the Bonnies scheduled to play Roberts Wesleyan in singles at 10 a.m. and in doubles at 1 p.m. Bona is also slated to play Pitt-Bradford in doubles at 2 p.m. All competition is set to be played at the SBU Outdoor Courts, weather permitting with a rain location of the SBU Fitness Center.
