ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 5th-seeded St. Bonaventure men's tennis team will open its 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship play on Friday at 9 a.m. (EDT) from the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
The team (8-10) will face off with 12th-seeded Fordham (4-15), which enters the tournament having lost five straight and eight of its last nine matches. The Bonnies and Rams did not meet in the regular season, but do share common opponents in Saint Joseph's and La Salle. Fordham lost to La Salle, 4-3, and Joe's, 7-0, while St. Bonaventure defeated the Explorers, 7-0, and the Hawks, 6-1.
Should the Bonnies beat Fordham, they will play 4th-seeded Duquesne – which received a first-round bye – later on Friday at 3 p.m. (EDT) with a spot in the semifinals on the line. The Bonnies and Dukes met earlier this year in January, with Duquesne pulling out a 6-1 victory.
If the team loses, it will go into the consolation bracket to face the loser of the match between 9th-seeded Dayton and 8th-seeded Saint Joseph's.
The tournament will be seniors Enric Larregola, Mikhail Sudakov and Chris Post's (all pictured) last time wearing the Brown and White. Post comes in red hot, having lost only two sets total in his last five matches. In that span, the team has gone 4-1, including those road wins at La Salle and Saint Joe's.
Since 2001, St. Bonaventure has appeared in the A-10 Championship semifinals eight times and won the title twice (2001, 2003).
