ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University men's swimming and diving team head swimming coach Skip Nitardy and head diving coach Stephanie Fleming have announced the addition of seven student-athletes to the roster for the 2019-20 season.
Joining the Bonnies from Vero Beach, Fla. is Tomas Botero. He is a distance freestyle swimmer from Saint Edwards School. Botero's personal best times include 16:06.90 in the 1650-freestyle, 9:35.78 in the 1000-freestyle and 4:36.89 in the 500-freestyle. He also ran cross country and participated in triathlons in high school. Botero is an undeclared major.
NITARDY ON BOTERO: "He is a phenomenal student and is a really good kid. He is a good distance swimmer and has been tearing up the pool already. He is a very hard worker."
Austin Campbell joins the Bonnies as a diver from Huntersville, N.C. As a senior at Pine Lake Prep, Campbell earned a second-place finish at the state championship meet and is also a two-time national qualifier. Campbell will major in biology at St. Bonaventure.
FLEMING ON CAMPBELL: "Austin has fit right in with the guys. He has had a great start to the year. He adds to the team chemistry and talent, coming in strong as a freshman. He is learning every day from the rest of the guys. We are excited to see what he can do this year."
Griffin Witte from Webster, N.Y. Witte swims the backstroke, freestyle and butterfly. He was named to the First Team All-County two years in a row and was named the team's Most Valuable Performer. Witte helped his relay team earn first-place at the Section V Championship meet in the 200-medley relay. He finished in the top-10 in the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays at the NYS Championship meet. Academically, Witte was a member of the High Honor Roll and the National Honor Society. Witte is a physical education major at St. Bonaventure.
NITARDY ON WITTE: "Griffin is very versatile. He is becoming a good teammate already. He is going to swim in a few different events for us that he may not have in high school."
Elias Petri joins the Brown and White from Saint Charles, Minn. Petri swam for Minnesota Connections Academy and swims all four strokes. In 2017, he was a participant at the USA Swimming Central Zone Select Camp. Petri also has three top-eight finishes at the Speedo Sectionals in 2018 as well as multiple top-eight finishes at the state championship meet spanning from 2012-2018. Petri is a political science major at St. Bonaventure.
NITARDY ON PETRI: "We recruited Elias for distance freestyle, but he is a very versatile swimmer. The workout training is a new adjustment but he is getting better day after day."
Joshua Bannon from Austin, Texas. Bannon swam for St. Michael's Catholic Academy in the freestyle, breaststroke and IM events. His personal best times include 4:45.44 in the 500-freestyle, 59.51 in the 100-breaststroke, 1:55.43 in the 200-IM and 4:04.94 in the 400-IM. As a senior, Bannon set a school record in the 200-IM and a TAPPS state record and school record in the 100-breaststroke at the TAPPS Division II State Championships. Josh majors in business at St. Bonaventure.
NITARDY ON BANNON: "Josh is a 400-IM guy. He is also going to do some distance swimming for us and we think he has a chance to do some scoring for us this year. He is another recruit that is an excellent student as well."
Nicholas Nakaya joins the Bonnies all the way from Honolulu, Hawaii. Nakaya swims the breaststroke and his personal best times include 2:05.05 in the 200-breaststroke and 58.80 in the 100-breaststroke. Nakaya was a qualifier for the 2018 Winter Junior Nationals. He also earned an excellence in a second language award for his knowledge of the Japanese language. Nakaya plans to major in sports medicine.
NITARDY ON NAKAYA: "Nick is going to come in a compete in the breaststroke right away for us. We are looking for him to step up and grow throughout the season. Even when we are not working on the breaststroke, he is competing no matter what."
Nicholas Torre from Glenview, Ill. Torre swims the backstroke and freestyle and his personal best times include 53.08 in the 100-backstroke, 1:57.01 in the 200-backstroke and 4:43.47 in the 500-freestyle. Torre is a two-time all-conference selection and was named an All-American in the 200-freestyle relay. He was also a member of the 2018 IHSA State Championship team. Torre is an undeclared business major.
COACH NITARDY ON TORRE: "Nick is doing really well and keeps surprising us. He is training up with some of our top swimmers and we are looking forward to seeing what he can do this year and in the future."
