AKRON, Ohio – Strong team performances in the 200-freestyle relay, 200-IM and 50-freestyle paced the St. Bonaventure men's swimming team at the Akron Zippy Invite Friday.
The Bonnies find themselves in fourth place after day one with 314 team points. Oakland is currently in first place with 726.5 and Bloomsburg sits in second place with 461 points.
Two top-10 placings in the 200-freestyle relay "A" final got the Bonnies started in the night session. The team of Robert Marshall, Jake Ruffolo, Marcus Swartfager and Joseph Malafronte clocked in at 1:24.60 which was good for sixth place. Alec Thomas, Chauncey Nicholas, William Lowe and Guido Balderrama were right behind them in eighth place, finishing with a time of 1:25.99.
In the 200-IM, the Bonnies had six top-15 finishes and seven qualifiers in the final session. Jason Green paced the Bonnies with a fifth place finish, registering a time of 1:54.33 and Balderrama grabbed sixth place with a time of 1:55.20 in the "A" final. George Kalletta finished in ninth place overall and swam a time of 1:54.28 in the "B" final. John Pietrucha (1:55.23), Hylton Collinson (1:56.13) and Ethan Carr rounded out the scoring for Bona in the "B" final, finishing in 10th, 12th and 14th respectively. Ruffolo competed in the "C" Final, swimming a time of 1:59.62.
The Bonnies also had six swimmer qualify for the night session in the 50-freestyle. Marshall led the scoring with a seventh place finish, clocking in at 21.31 in the "A" final. Swimming in the "B" final was Malafronte, who finished in 12th place with a time of 21.62 and Nicholas in 15th place with a mark of 21.71. Lowe, Swartfager and Ruffolo all competed in the "C" final for the Bonnies as well.
Kalletta also earned a ninth place finish in the 500-freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:39.16.
The Bonnies return to the pool Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. for preliminary heats. Final heats are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
