ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University Director of Athletics Tim Kenney has announced the hiring of Skip Nitardy as head coach of the Bonnies swimming and diving programs.
Nitardy brings over 25 years of competitive coaching experience to the Bonnies on various levels nationwide.
"We are excited to welcome Skip to the Bonaventure family as head coach of our swimming programs," Kenney said. "Our programs have a long history of success and Skip will be a great fit with his experience and personality to continue that tradition. We are very excited for the future of St. Bonaventure swimming and diving."
Nitardy will take the reins of both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams as the programs will be unified for the first time beginning with the 2018-19 season.
"I'm excited to get up there and get things started. St. Bonaventure swimming and diving has great tradition that I look forward to carrying on," Nitardy said. "I am very excited about bringing the two programs together. We start the season in just over a month and I am really looking forward to meeting all the kids and getting to work."
He served as head coach at the University of Maine for two seasons. While at Maine, Nitardy helped 14 swimmers qualify to the ECAC Championships in his first season and 22 swimmers in his second campaign.
He has received various accolades on the national stage for his work at the YMCA level. He was named the 2007 Maine YMCA Coach of the Year while serving at the Bangor YMCA. Prior to that, he was voted the 2004 Connecticut Swimming Senior Coach of the Year and YMCA Coach of the Year while working at the Darien YMCA in Darien, Conn.
Also during his time at Maine, Nitardy spent extensive time working with the community as he expanded the UMaine Instructional Swim Lesson program to nearly 250 participants per year.
After leaving the University of Maine, Nitardy was named the aquatics director and head swim coach at the Twin Rivers YMCA in New Bern, N.C. While there, he qualified five swimmers for the YMCA national championship meet.
In his most recent role, Nitardy has worked as director of athletics at The Epiphany School of Global Studies in New Bern since 2014. In his role as director of athletics, he was responsible for budgeting, ordering, officials, scheduling and transportation of the athletic department as a whole.
Nitardy earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education at South Alabama. He is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and the American Red Cross.
Stephanie Fleming will remain in charge of the Bonnies divers. Nitardy will also fill out the remainder of his coaching staff in the coming days.
