ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.- Junior Mike Murphy and senior Yi Liu were honored for not only their work in the pool but by their hard work in the class room. The two were named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Swimming & Diving Academic All-Conference team. The teams were selected through voting conducted by the league's Sports Information Directors.
This caps off a tremendous year for Murphy. Murphy, a Sayville, N.Y. native, has also been on the Dean's List every semester since entering St. Bonaventure,. The Sayville High School product won the 1-meter and three meter dive at the A-10 championships, and walked away with Men's Diver of the Year honors. During the regular season, Murphy set a program record in the 3-meter dive by earning a 350.70 score in a meet against The University of Buffalo. This is the second straight year he has been named to the team.
With his successful regular-season campaign, Murphy qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships – the diving equivalent of the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The math major has a cumulative GPA of 3.785 over the first five semesters of his collegiate career.
Liu makes his first trip to the list. The Toronto, Ontario native earned third-place in the 200-yard butterfly at A-10's, posting a time of 1:50. Also at Championships he finished in 11th-place in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:03.91. In the 200-yard freestyle against Canisius, he finished in first-place touching the wall with a time of 1:45.43. He also picked up a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (52.32).
The men's swimming and diving team finished its 2011-12 season with a second-place showing at the A-10 championships for the sixth consecutive year.
