Bonnies Travel To Niagara This Weekend

NIAGARA, N.Y.- The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team travel to Niagara this Saturday to take on the Purple Eagles at 1 p.m.

The Bonnies hope to have a repeat of last season's dominating 206-87 victory.

In that meet, Stephen Melchiorre and John Mackiewicz and John McMahon gave the Purple Eagles a run for their money, sweeping the 100-yard backstroke. Melchiorre touched in at 55.09, with Mackeiwicz (55.18) and McMahon (55.25) close behind.

Elias Homerin swam a 9:50.35 in the 1000-yard freestyle, good for first-place, while freshman Mike Hartwell nabbed second with a time of 10:07.08.

Dominic Butts-Ealy earned 323.02 points, earning the top spot in the 1-meter dive, and Mike Murphy grabbed second with 309.60 points.

The Brown and White are coming off a 166-133 victory against Binghamton last Saturday.

In that meet, James Martin picked up two first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (21.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.98).

Homerin continued to pick up victories in the long distance events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, he finished in second-place with a time of 9:51.64. Teammate Mike Hartwell finished in third-place (9:57.53). In the 200-yard butterfly Homerin finished in first-place with a time of 1:56.31 and Yi Liu finished in third-place (1:56.71).

The Bonnies swept the top three spots in the 200-yard backstroke with Stephen Melchiorre finishing in first-place (1:56.68), Peter Koenig in second-place (1:56.83) John McMahon in third-place (2:01.43).

The Bonnies then gear up for The University of Buffalo in their final regular season meet next Saturday, February 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the Reilly center. It will be the last chance to see the Bonnies before they head back to Buffalo for the Atlantic- 10 Championships.
