Bonnies Defeat A-10 Foe La Salle

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team took first-place in 13 out of 18 events to defeat A-10 opponent La Salle 209-125 Saturday at the Flickinger Aquatic Center.

Junior Elias Homerin led the way for the Bonnies by taking first in three events, the 1650-yard Freestyle (16:30.86), the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.82) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.04).

Also in the 200-yard butterfly, Yi Liu (1:55.71) and Matthew Rochna (1:58.65) rounded out the top three by finishing in second and third-place, respectively.

In the 1650-yard freestyle, Mike Hartwell placed third with a time of 16:46.51.

The Stephen Melchiorre (1:55.38), Peter Koenig (1:55.50) and John McMahon (1:57.60) finished 1-2-3 in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard freestyle James Martin (1:42.71) finished in first-place, touching the wall just ahead of teammate Michael Dansa (1:45.52).

Martin also picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.76. Nathan Destree finished in third-place with a time of 48.72. Destree also picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.11.

In the 200-yard IM, Ripley Danner (1:55.85), Liu (1:59.81) and Melchiorre (2:00.73) took the top three spots.

 Peter Koenig took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.22 and Tim Mangis (54.50) finished in second-place.

Mike Burud (59.33) and Robert Rutkowski Jr. (59.78) finished in second and third-place in the 100-yard breaststroke. Rutkowski also finished in second-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.74, touching just ahead of teammate Dansa (2:13.07) who finished in third-place.

In the 50-yard freestyle, David Paccapaniccia finished in third-place with a time of 22.13.

In relays, the 400-freestyle relay 'A' team finished in first-place with a time of 3:10.81 and the 'B' team finished in third (3:17.68). The 400-yard medley relay 'A' team finished in first-place (3:28.50) and the 'B' team placed third (3:34.69). 

In the 200-yard medley relay, the 'A' team finished in second-place and the 'B' team finished in third-place with time of 1:35.52 and 1:39.00, respectively. In the 200-yard freestyle relay the 'A' team finished in second-place (1:27.22) and the 'B' team finished in third-place (1:27.88).

In diving action, Mike Murphy finished in first-place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 323.4 and Dominic Butts-Ealy finished in second-place with a score on 278.85. In the 1-meter event, Murphy (307.12) and Butts-Ealy (300.97) finished in first and second places, respectively. With their scores for the events, both divers qualified for the Zone Diving Championships.

Next week the Bonnies travel to Cleveland St. for a tri-meet against Cleveland St. and Valparaiso. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m.
