Men's Swimming and Diving dominates the Purple Eagles

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The men's swimming and diving team sent its senior off in style on Senior Day, defeating Niagara, 206-87, Saturday afternoon in the last home meet of the year.

Kevin Murphy, Trevor Herzog, Santiago Castaneda, Chris Baker, Hunter Baskerville, Dawid Kundzik and Jared Robinson were honored for their hard work and dedication prior to their last meet at the Reilly Center Pool. 

Baker and Murphy, along with juniors Francisco Nieves and Ilya Nenashev kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The group swam a combined time of 1:37.58.

In individual events, Murphy excelled in the 50-yard freestyle, earning first place with a time of 22.10. Nieves grabbed second, swimming a 22.22. 

Also helping out the Brown and White, Castaneda picked up a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, touching in at 2:04.05.

Keeping the momentum going, Baskerville took the win in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.51, while freshman James Martin swam an exhibition time of 1:58.57.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Nenashev took second while teammates Mike Dansa and Robert Rutkowski, took first and second for the sweep. Dansa swam a 1:01.03 while Nenashev and Rutkowski touched in at 1:01.47 and 1:02.95, respectively.

The Bonnies also swept the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Yi Liu grabbed first with a 1:44.80 while Kundzik (1:44.87) took second, and sophomore David Erickson (1:49.91) rounded it out.

Freshmen Stephen Melchiorre and John Mackiewicz and junior John McMahon gave the Purple Eagles a run for their money, sweeping the 100-yard backstroke. Melchiorre touched in at 55.09, with Mackeiwicz (55.18) and McMahon (55.25) close behind.

Sophomore Elias Homerin swam a 9:50.35 in the 1000-yard freestyle, good for first place, while freshman Mike Hartwell nabbed second with a time of 10:07.08.

Hartwell also took second in the 500-yard freestyle competition while Erickson took first.  They swam times of 4:56.33 and 4:55.93, respectively.

In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Nathan Destree grabbed another win for the Bonnies, swimming a 53.13. 

Freshman Mike Burud clocked a time of 48.88 in the 100-yard freestyle, good for first, while Rutkowski swam a 2:18.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke, earning a first-place finish.  Fellow freshman, Patrick O'Donnell, also picked up number-one spot, swimming a 2:01.08 in the 200-yard backstroke.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Destree, Burud, Melchiorre and Kundzik took first with a combined time of 1:29.00.

In diving, freshman Dominic Butts-Ealy earned 323.02 points, earning the top spot in the 1-meter dive.  Sophomore Mike Murphy grabbed second with 309.60 points and Herzog picked up fourth with 278.85 points.

In the 3-meter dive, Murphy scored a 335.62, good for second.  Butts-Ealy and Herzog placed third and fourth, respectively, with scores of 314.40 and 304.95.

The Bonnies return to the pool Feb. 5 at the University at Buffalo. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
