ELMA, N.Y. – Luca Nicastro's golden goal in overtime sent the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Gannon Friday afternoon at Sahlen's Sports Park.

Nicastro found the ball at his feet after a Gannon turnover, dribbling down the middle of the field. He made a move on the goalkeeper and freed himself up to bury the game-winner in the 95th minute.

It was a back and forth first half between the Bonnies and the Golden Knights in Bona's first official game in 475 days.

The Golden Knights netted the equalizer in the 75th minute when Lennox Crews' corner found Sergio Del Castillo's foot and he slotted it home.

Gannon, which reached the Division II Sweet 16 before losing to the eventual national champion in 2019, had the first chance on net in the 22nd minute but sophomore goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu shifted over and was able to make the save.

A few moments later in the 29th minute, Shea Currey found Fredrik Hansen alone in the box and swung a ball in, but Hansen's header was stopped by the Gannon goalkeeper.

Cuneyt Vardar looked to get in on the action as he received a low pass from Joshua Pulla in front of net but pushed the shot just wide of the net.

The Bonnies finally found the back of the net in the 41st minute after Pulla won a free kick just outside of the box. Currey stepped up and rocketed the freekick past the goalie, giving Bona a 1-0 lead.

Gannon, fresh off an 18-3 record in 2019, continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone in the second half, forcing Sandhu to make a pair of diving saves in the 61st minute, preserving the Bona lead.

Pulla had a chance to give the Bonnies the late lead in the 86th minute but his shot was denied.

Sandhu matched his career-high with eight saves in net to lead the Bonnies.

The Bonnies are off until March 7 when they host St. Francis (Pa.). That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
