MIAMI, Fla. – Sophomore midfielder Cuneyt Vardar scored his first career goal, but the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team dropped its season opener to Florida International, 5-1, Friday evening.
Florida International jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Inigo Sagarduy found the back of the net in the eighth minute. The Panthers doubled their lead in the 23rd minute when Owen Green netted his first goal of the season.
Vardar pulled the Bonnies back within one, 2-1, in the 42nd minute.
The momentum would immediately swing back in favor of FIU, however.
Andrew Booth put FIU back in the scoring column with a goal of his own in the 43rd minute, making the score 3-1, and giving the Panthers control they would never relinquish.
The Bonnies conceded a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute and Booth added another score in the 55th minute, giving FIU a 5-1 advantage and the win.
St. Bonaventure was slated to play a pair of matches this weekend in Florida, but due to the impacts of Hurricane Dorian the scheduled game against Florida Atlantic on Sunday has been canceled.
