Bonnies Fall Short At VCU, 2-1, In Season Finale

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Nicola Bonso scored his second goal of the season, but it was not enough as the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to VCU, 2-1, on the road Wednesday to close out the 2018 season.

The Bonnies close out the 2018 season with a record of 7-9-1 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic 10.

St. Bonaventure finished in a three-way tie for eighth in the conference standings with UMass and Saint Joseph's with nine points apiece, but will not advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the second consecutive year due to conference tiebreaker rules.

VCU (10-5-1), receiving votes in the latest national Top 25 poll, put the pressure on the Bonnies defense early by firing five shots in a six-minute span, but the Rams could not find the target.

Bonnies senior goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis made two of his three first half saves on back-to-back stops in the 22nd minute to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.

The Bonnies offense would grab the momentum shortly after.

In the 24th minute, sophomore Shea Currey stood over a corner kick and found the head of Ethan Yeung, whose shot was saved, but fellow sophomore Nicola Bonso was there to clean up the rebound shot by depositing his effort into the back of the net to give the Bonnies a 1-0 advantage.

Bona would take that edge into intermission, but the Rams would square the score less than 10 minutes into the second half.

The VCU pressure continued in the second half and in the 54th minute, the Rams finally struck. Peter Pearson scored the equalizer after he got open in the center of the box.

VCU grabbed the lead in the 73rd minute as Pearson would net his second score of the game, giving the Rams a 2-1 advantage with what turned out to be the game-winner.

Kosi Nwafornso led the Bonnies offense with five shots and Iacobellis made four saves in net.
