PK in 89th Minute Sends Saint Louis Past Bonnies, 2-1, in Saturday Heartbreaker

PK in 89th Minute Sends Saint Louis Past Bonnies, 2-1, in Saturday Heartbreaker

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Kosi Nwafornso netted his fourth penalty kick of the season and seventh goal overall, but a penalty kick strike from the Saint Louis Billikens with less than two minutes in regulation broke a tie and sent the visitors to a 2-1 win over the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team Saturday night.

After a scoreless 41 minutes in the first half, the Bonnies were able to break the deadlock in the 42nd minute.

Nikko Richards was pulled down in the box by a Saint Louis defender to be awarded a penalty kick. Then Nwafornso stepped up and buried the penalty shot in the middle of the net, giving the Bonnies a 1-0 lead as he moved to a perfect 4-for-4 on PKs this season.

After the Bonnies took a 1-0 lead to halftime, the Billikens immediately found the equalizer at the start of the second half.

Saint Louis (5-2-5, 2-1-2 Atlantic 10) was able to even the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute on a goal from John Klein. The ball found its way into the Bonnies penalty box and Klein was able to sneak it past the goalkeeper for the score on a ball that the Bonnies argued did not cross the goal line, but was deemed to just have snuck in for the 1-1 tie.

Freshman Jacob Jashinski had a chance to put the Bonnies ahead with perhaps their best opportunity in the second half, but hit a rocket just wide in the 77th minute.

A close second half saw the game tied until the 89th minute when the Bonnies were called for a handball in the box. Devin Boyce stepped up and converted the penalty kick to give Saint Louis a 2-1 edge.

Nwafornso led the way for St. Bonaventure with two shots and Luke Iacobellis made two saves in net.

The Bonnies fall to 5-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

St. Bonaventure returns to action with a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 16 on the road at Syracuse. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and can been seen on the ACC Network through Watch ESPN.
