NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis and freshman midfielder Isaac Boamah have been named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week, conference officials announced Monday.
Iacobellis and Boamah helped the Bonnies defeat UMass, 2-1, Saturday on the road in the 2018 Atlantic 10 opener.
The Toronto, Ontario native made a season-high seven saves including five stops in the first half alone. Iacobellis faced a total of 17 shots, allowing just one goal.
In seven starts this season, Iacobellis has made 23 saves for a .774 save percentage. He also is touting a 0.97 goals against average, ranking fifth in the A-10.
A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Boamah registered the first goal of his young SBU career, registering the game-winner in the 28th minute against UMass Saturday. Kosi Nwafornso linked up with Shea Currey at the top of the box. Boamah was able to sneak behind the UMass defense, where Currey was able to find him and Boamah buried the shot in the upper left corner of the net. Boamah's effort on a laser off a defender just minutes before led to a UMass own goal, tying the game at 1-1.
Boamah has one goal and one assist on the season and is currently second on the team in points with three. He has started in all six games he has played in and has accumulated 358 minutes of playing time.
The Bonnies opened A-10 play with a win for the first time since 2013 when they beat Saint Joseph's, 2-0.
The Bonnies return home for a pair of Atlantic 10 matchups against Dayton and Rhode Island. The Brown and White welcome Dayton Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7:00 p.m. and Rhode Island Saturday, Oct. 6 also at 7:00 p.m.
