Boamah Leads Bonnies Past UMass, 2-1, in A-10 Opener

Three Keys To The Game

  • Freshman Isaac Boamah registered his first career goal and first career game-winning goal in the 28th minute to give the Bonnies the victory.
  • Senior Luke Iacobellis made five first half saves and added two more in the second half for a season-high total of seven saves.
  • Saturday's win marks the eighth road win for the Bonnies since the start of the 2017 season.

AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Isaac Boamah scored his first career goal and senior Luke Iacobellis made seven saves to lead the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over UMass on the road Saturday afternoon. Saturday's win marks the first time the Bonnies have won their A-10 opener since 2013.

The win moves the Bonnies to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Atlantic 10, while UMass falls to 4-4-2 and 0-1-0 in the A-10.

UMass got on the board first early in the first half when Davis Smith found the back of the net in the 12th minute, giving the Minutemen an early 1-0 edge.

The Brown and White took the unconventional route to get back in the game as the UMass defense put the ball in its own net for an own goal in the 26th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.

Momentum, however, would stay with the Bonnies.

A minute and forty-five seconds later in the 28th minute, Boamah would get the goal to put the Bonnies on top for good.

The Kumasi, Ghana native netted his first career goal for St. Bonaventure on a ball played in by Shea Currey. Senior Kosi Nwafornso and Currey were both credited with their second assists of the year.

The defense would take care of the rest as Iacobellis made a season-high seven saves to keep the UMass offense from finding the equalizer.

The Bonnies resume their Atlantic 10 schedule Wednesday when they welcome Dayton to the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
