INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time in as many days St. Bonaventure University men's soccer senior Kieran Toland has earned National Player of the Week honors, being named the top Division I player for the week ending Nov. 5 on Wednesday by NCAA Soccer.
Toland was selected as one of four finalists to be up for a final vote to be named the national player of the week as NCAA Soccer does each week through its official Twitter account. He was selected along with William & Mary midfielder Antonio Bustamante, Virginia goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell and St. John's midfielder Harry Cooksley.
In a voting held Wednesday, Toland received 43 percent of the fan vote to receive the week's top honor.
"Kieran has been an instrumental captain for our young team," St. Bonaventure head coach Kwame Oduro said. "He was excellent this season and I am very happy for the accolades he has achieved. Kieran deserves it and I wish him all the best in his professional endeavors."
On Tuesday, Toland was chosen as the United Soccer Coaches National Division I Player of the Week after his standout performance over a nationally ranked VCU team. He notched a goal and an assist in St. Bonaventure's 2-1 upset over No. 22 VCU last Wednesday to lead the Bonnies.
He scored possibly the goal of the season for the Brown and White during the eighth minute as his shot curled around the post into the upper-90 of the net, giving the Rams' goalkeeper no chance of making the save.
Toland assisted on the eventual game-winning goal from his corner kick that fell to freshman Nicola Bonso, who buried the shot to give the Bonnies the 2-1 lead. The victory clinched St. Bonaventure's first Atlantic 10 Tournament bid since 2010. Toland led the Bonnies with 14 points on four goals and six assists this season. St. Bonaventure finished its season at 8-9-2 overall including a 4-4 mark in the Atlantic 10.
Toland becomes the second St. Bonaventure soccer player to earn NCAA Soccer National Player of the Week honors as women's soccer sophomore Lauren Malcolm also won a social media fan vote earlier this season.
