ONEONTA, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team fell at Hartwick, 3-0, in its first game of the 2016 season on Friday.
The Bonnies held off the Hartwick attack for the first 19 minutes of the game, but the Hawks' Mike Rood broke through and scored the first goal of the game at the 19:24 mark. Shortly after, Rood headed a cross into the back of the Bona net at the 27:10 mark for his second goal of the game to put the Hawks up, 2-0.
The Bonnies then went on the counter and earned a corner kick at the 28:47 mark. Paul Afful took the set piece and Kwame Opoku put the cross on net, but a save by the Hartwick keeper neutralized the Bona threat.
St. Bonaventure earned another corner kick opportunity shortly before the close of the first half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Hartwick scored its final goal of the game to go up 3-0 at the 74:34 mark, and they held down the Bona attack the rest of the way.
The Hawks put five shots on goal, and the sophomore Bona goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis made two saves.
The Bonnies will have a quick turnaround as they take on Bucknell for the 2016 home opener on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
