RICHMOND, Va. - The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 play on the road Wednesday evening at VCU, dropping a 2-0 decision SportsBackers Stadium.
Things were even for much of the first half, with the Bonnies creating an early attack when Anthony Sileo fired on net but was denied by VCU goalie Pierre Gardan in the fifth minute.
Bonnies keeper Bobby Diaz turned away back-to-back shots later in the early minutes, keeping things even.
Eddie Keen placed another shot on goal for the Bonnies in the 39th minute, but again Gardan was able to make the save.
The Rams (3-6-2, 1-0-1 Atlantic 10) were finally able to break through in the 42nd minute. Lyndsey Moreland took advantage of a skirmish in front of the net, capitalizing for his first goal of the year and a 1-0 lead for the home team.
The score remained 1-0 until the the 83rd minute when VCU's Cody Sweatte found the net, scoring insurance for the hosts.
"I thought we played well enough to give ourselves a chance to win against one of the best teams in the country," Bonnies head coach Kwame Oduro said.
Diaz posted a season-best 10 saves on the night for the Bonnies (1-10-1).
St. Bonaventure returns home Saturday night, continuing A-10 play by hosting La Salle at the Marra Athletics Fields Complex for a 7 p.m. start.
