St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse head coach Randy Mearns and his staff have announced team captains for the 2021 season – Austin Blumbergs, Brett Beetow, Ben Mazur and Daire Newbrough.

"Being a captain for any team is a privilege and honor that comes with great responsibility.  I am proud to announce that we have entrusted Austin, Brett, Daire and Ben to serve in these leadership roles," Mearns said. "We have built a solid foundation in three years and selfless leadership is a key to our success in 2021.  Each athlete brings something a little different to the group and it is quite evident that they care for their teammates and set the standard as mentors and competitors every single day on campus."

Blumbergs is a third-year attack from Penn Yan, N.Y. who has started 15 of 18 games played the past two seasons. He scored 11 goals with three assists as a freshman to earn a spot on the MAAC All-Rookie Team. In last spring's shortened season, he scored three goals with an assist, adding five groundballs and two caused turnovers in five games. He is also a member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll.

Beetow joined the program last season as a transfer from the University of Tampa. A native of Lancaster, N.Y., the midfielder appeared in all six games including four starts, scoring two goals with an assist for three total points in his debut Bonnies season. He also added three groundballs and won his only two faceoffs.

A goalkeeper from Lancaster, Mazur is in his third year with the program as well. As a freshman, he appeared in 12 games including six starts, making 93 saves with a 48.4 save percentage. For his career, he has turned away 107 shots in nearly 500 minutes of action. He is also a member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll.

One of the Bonnies' veteran-most players, Newbrough is a redshirt junior from Waterloo, Ontario. The midfielder played in eight games with 13 groundballs and five caused turnovers in 2019 before suffering a season-ending injury. He overcame injury to return last spring and played in all six games prior to the spring sports shutdown.

The Bonnies open up the 2021 season at Quinnipiac Saturday, March 6. That contest will not count toward conference standings while the rest of the remaining seven games will be MAAC battles.
