CLEVELAND – Eight first quarter goals from the Vikings set the tone as the Cleveland State men's lacrosse team scored a convincing 18-5 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings evened their record at 6-6 on the season – though that record is a bit deceiving. Playing as an independent without a conference affiliation, Cleveland State has played one of the nation's toughest schedules – among its losses are battles to the wire vs. No. 1 Penn State (15-11), No. 15/16 Ohio State (12-9) and No. 20 Michigan (10-8) as well as setbacks vs. No. 8/9 Denver (16-8), No. 15 North Carolina (15-9) and Air Force (11-8).
Cleveland State showed its strength early, scoring five times in the first five minutes including a man-up tally at the 9:37 mark of the first quarter.
The hosts scored the game's first 10 goals before Matthew DeGirolamo got the Bonnies on the board off a feed from Austin Blumbergs at the 9:57 mark of the second. John Killcommons followed with a goal of his own just over a minute later with Nick Conklin credited for the assist.
Cleveland State entered halftime with a 12-2 lead, but the Bonnies would score the first goal of the second half when Killcommons and Conklin teamed again just 34 seconds into the third quarter.
The hosts scored the next two goals before Jackson Rose and DeGirolamo scored back-to-back for a 14-5 score. Cleveland State would register the final four goals of the game, however.
Brett Dobson played the final three quarters and turned away 12 shots.
Conklin continued his strong play, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with his two assists. He also won both attempts he had in the faceoff X.
The Bonnies are back in action Tuesday evening with a MAAC contest against Canisius. Things get underway the lights at the Marra Athletics Complex at 7 p.m.
