Strong Efforts Not Enough in Pair of Match Play Setbacks For Bona Golfers

WESTON, Fla. – Despite strong play from the majority of the lineup, the St. Bonaventure golf team dropped a pair of matches Monday in the President's Day Match Play Championship at Weston Hills Country Club.

Third-seeded Belmont took all six matches from the sixth-seeded Bonnies in the morning round. Lance Sininger and Christian Chapman fought to the wire before Bogle LaRue and Evan Davis took 1-up victories for the Bears.

In the second round, the Bonnies were paired with second-seeded Mercer where Danny Gianniny earned the lone team point for the Brown and White. Gianniny won his match 1-up over Mercer's Jay Spivey.

The day's results were more indicative of the tremendous play from Bona's competition rather than SBU struggles, however. For instance – Christian Chapman's morning 67 still was not good enough to defeat Evan Davis who won by a stroke for Belmont.

"As a team had it been stroke play, counting our four lowest scores, we were hovering around four or five under for the day – 283-288," head coach Ryan Swanson said. "We got beat by the two seed and the three seed in the event so we got some stout competition and we never quit. The guys played well and got beat which, honestly in golf, is better than playing poorly and winning. We certainly gave some holes away inside 50 yards and on and around greens, so we have to get better in order to make more birdies. I'm certainly not disappointed; we had awesome showings from our freshmen. In late April (for the Atlantic 10 Championship), hopefully it is a better outcome."

The Bonnies will play against Eastern Kentucky, the No. 5 seed in the tournament before falling to Austin Peay and George Washington, in the final round of match play Tuesday at 7 a.m.
