Bonnies Golf To Host Little Three Championship Presented by H&R Block Tuesday at Bartlett CC

Tuesday, Sept. 10 – 8:00 a.m.
Bartlett Country Club – Olean, N.Y.

The St. Bonaventure golf team has the opportunity to host the Little Three Championship presented by H&R Block for the first time since 2016 when it welcomes rivals Canisius and Niagara to Bartlett Country Club. It will be the first time the Bonnies have hosted the Little Three Championship on their own home course at Bartlett Country Club.

This year's event will again be 36 holes in a play six players, count four scores format.

The championship has been played between the Little Three Western New York rivals since 1952 and this will be the 66th edition of the event which has been played consecutively each year since 1981. The first edition of the event was won by St. Bonaventure at Lancaster Country Club. Since then, the Bonnies have dominated – especially in recent years.

St. Bonaventure has won the event 41 times including three years in a row. Canisius and Niagara have each won 12 times with Canisius winning most recently in 2015 while Niagara has not won since 2003.

This year is special for the Bonnies as the event comes to their home course at Bartlett Country Club. The last time the Bonnies had hosting rights, the event was played at Springville Country Club. In past years, the Bonnies have "hosted" at places like Holiday Valley in Ellicottville, Pine Acres in Bradford and Moonbrook in Jamestown, but never right down the road in Olean. It will be the first time the Bonnies have hosted an event at Bartlett Country Club since 2015.

Head coach Ryan Swanson has only been a part of Little Three winners. As a player, he helped the Bonnies win the event all four years of his undergraduate career. As head coach, he has led the team to wins in each of the last three seasons.

"It is really cool to be able to bring this event to Bartlett," head coach Ryan Swanson said. "It is great to have their support all year long. I'm excited to showcase the course this week. There will be a home course advantage for sure. We hope to get a good turnout of fans to support the club and the guys as we look to keep the Little Three trophy."

Bonnies junior Jack Geise won the 2018 edition of the Little Three, punching his ticket to the Porter Cup with matching rounds of 71 for a 142 total. Geise also played well two years ago at the Niagara Falls Country Club when he tied for fourth with rounds of 78 and 74.

Other returning Bonnies have been strong in the event as well – sophomore Erik Stauderman tied for second last year, just one stroke off the lead after he shot 71 in the opening round and 72 in the afternoon.

Junior Danny Gianniny tied for fourth last year (72-74/146) and tied for seventh as a freshman (78-81/159) while senior Zach Chaddock finished 11th last year (76-77/153). Senior Nolan Ditcher finished sixth in 2017 at Niagara Falls CC and ninth at Springville as a freshman.

The Golden Griffs have played in one tournament this fall, finishing 13th out of 14 teams at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at the Kaluhyat Course in Verona, N.Y. The field included Missouri, North Carolina and other top programs. Junior Matt Genaway led the team and finished 41st overall with a three-round total of 230. Senior David Hanes shot 79 in three straight rounds and senior Jaret Chipman had a final round 73. Last year, Hanes placed fourth at the Little Three at Crag Burn Golf Club in East Aurora with rounds of 75 and 71. Chipman was seventh after carding 75, 74.

Niagara also played at Turning Stone last week Sept. 1-2 and placed 14th. Sophomore Lincoln Cizek made his season debut with a final round 77, leading the Purple Eagles overall. Fellow sophomore Tyler Edholm was a contender at last year's Little Three, posting a two-round total score of 142 at Crag Burn Golf Club to finish second.
