WESTON, Fla. – The St. Bonaventure golf team finished an impressive first week of spring competition with a convincing victory over Oakland, 4.5-1.5, to claim third-place at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship Tuesday morning at Weston Hills Country Club.
Matt Abendroth, Zach Chaddock, Danny Gianniny and Brent Morgan all won their head-to-head matches to earn points for the Bonnies against the third-seeded Golden Grizzlies. St. Bonaventure, seeded fifth in the bracket, defeated Morehead State (4-2) in the first round before dropping a hard-fought second round match to top-seeded Florida Atlantic (3.5 – 2.5) in Monday's first day of competition.
"This was a great win for our program," St. Bonaventure head coach Ryan Swanson said. "The teams we beat here are all ranked higher than us, so it's nice to see we can do that this early in the spring. Matt, Zach, Danny and Brent were phenomenal all week. Erik (Stauderman) was terrific for a freshman. A lot of birdies were made and we saw limited mistakes."
Oakland had defeated George Mason and fell to George Washington on Monday.
Abendroth stayed perfect for the week, winning his third match by convincing fashion, 3&2 over Sean Niles. Gianniny rolled, 6&4, over Marc Norton and Chaddock also dominated, 5&4, over Anthony Comito. Morgan scored a 2&1 victory vs. Chris Handy.
Stauderman and Colin Sikkenga halved their match while the only outright victory for Oakland went to Thomas Giroux, 8&6, over Jack Geise.
Like Abendroth, Chaddock had a perfect 3-0 record during match play for the Bonnies while Gianniny went 2-0-1 and Morgan finished 2-1 for the week.
In the championship match, George Washington defeated Florida Atlantic.
For the Bonnies, the outright third-place finish is their best in the four-year history of the event. Last year, SBU finished in a tie for third.
"We have a lot of momentum going into spring break and the remaining schedule," Swanson said. "We are very pleased with where we are."
Next up for the Bonnies is a trip to Atlanta when they play in the Emory/Oxford University Invite March 5.
