ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – St. Bonaventure University golf head coach Ryan Swanson has announced the signing of Andrew LaCongo to a National Letter of Intent to join the program this fall.
A native of Holland, N.Y., LaCongo becomes the second signing for next year's recruiting class, joining Lance Sininger who signed an NLI in December.
"It is a top priority of ours to get the best local talent that can compete at this level. Andrew is one of the best players in Western New York and the entire state," Swanson said of LaCongo. "We can't wait to get him here in August to see what he can do. We wish him well this spring, in his last high school season, which hopefully yields a run at a state championship in June."
Playing for the Holland/East Aurora High golf team, LaCongo broke his program's record for lowest scoring average at 35.75 this past fall and helped his team to a 10-0 record and ECIC team championship. He qualified for last year's New York State Public High School championships, finishing 13th out of 99 competitors following a fourth place finish at the Section VI championship tournament. His round of 72 at Sheridan Park Golf Club earned him the ECIC Boys Golf League 2017 individual championship.
A qualifier for last summer's International Junior Masters, he finished in the top eight in a field of 80 golfers from around the country, reaching the third round of match play. LaCongo also won the 2017 and 2018 East Aurora Junior Club Championship as well and is a certified coach and volunteer assistant for the First Tee of Western New York program introducing golf to kids around the area. He also competed at the National Drive, Chip and Putt competition at Augusta National in 2016 after winning the regional competition at Oakmont.
LaCongo's last name may sound familiar to fans of Bonnies athletics with good reason – his cousin, Tommy LaCongo played for the Bonaventure baseball team in 2016 and 2017.
LaCongo plans to major in environmental science at St. Bonaventure.
Swanson, who has led the Bonnies to six event victories the past two seasons, will guide the Bonnies into the spring season as competition begins at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship in Florida Feb. 18-19.
