Bonnies In Thick Of Pack After Day One at Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. – It was a tale of two rounds Saturday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course for the St. Bonaventure golf team as the Bonnies fired an impressive opening round 284 to rise on the leaderboard, but settled for 296 in the afternoon session to finish the day in eighth position out of 15 teams.

Yale was dominant on the day with a 554 total, well ahead of second-place Saint Joseph's (573), Penn (575), Bucknell (577) and Temple (578). St. Bonaventure stands just two shots back of the top five at 580 overall.

Bona was able to go low in the morning thanks to solid efforts throughout the lineup.

Sophomore Danny Gianniny and senior Brent Morgan each finished in red figures with Gianniny playing the 6,904-yard layout in 2-under 69 after draining four birdies. Morgan was in the clubhouse with a 1-under 70 with five birdies on his scorecard.

Sophomore Jack Geise, fresh off a win in Tuesday's Little Three Championship, opened the tournament with a 1-over 72. After a tough 3-over 39 on the front, he gathered into a rhythm with two birdies and no bogeys on the back nine with a 2-under 33.

Junior Zach Chaddock was heading for an even-par opening round, but a double bogey on the par-3 17th left him with an opening round 73. Reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week opened with 3-over 74.

The afternoon brought more challenges, though.

Geise had the best round for the Brown and White with an even-par 71 to finish at 143 for the tournament and tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard. Gianniny ended up with a 74 in the second round to also rank tied for 15th.

Morgan finished the day with a 75 for a 145 total and a tie for 28th. Chaddock and Stauderman are each tied for 52nd at 150.

The Achilles heel for the Bonnies were the final two holes as every member of the team carded at least one bogey in the last two holes of the second round.

Sunday's final round tees off at 8 a.m.
