ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – For the third time this season St. Bonaventure University freshman Danny Gianniny has earned Atlantic 10 golf Rookie of the Week honors, conference officials announced Friday.
The award includes the spring competitions through the week of March 21.
The Pittsford, N.Y. native continued his standout debut campaign with a pair of strong showings to begin the spring season.
At the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship last month, he went 1-1-1 as the Bonnies finished tied for third. He was key to Bona's 3.5-2.5 victory over Dayton in the first round, rallying from two down with two holes to play. Gianniny was able to grit out an all square finish and earn half a point for the team by draining a 30-footer for birdie to win the 17th hole, then also won the 18th when his competitor Caleb Wolters finished with double bogey. In the final round, he picked up a 3&1 victory in his match against Florida Atlantic.
At the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, Gianniny posted rounds of 73-75-75 to finish tied for 36th in a field of 90 competitors.
During the fall, Gianniny played in every event and logged an average score of 75.8.
Gianniny is the first Bonnies freshman to pick up A-10 Rookie of the Week honors three times since former Bonnie and current assistant coach Josh Stauffer did so during the 2013-14 season. Gianniny also received the award on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6 during the fall season.
The Bonnies are back in competition Sunday through Tuesday at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.
