NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure University freshman Danny Gianniny has earned Atlantic 10 golf Rookie of the Week honors, conference officials announced Friday.
Gianniny was named the league's top first-year golfer after an outstanding showing at the Cornell Invitational last weekend. In just his second collegiate event, the Pittsford, N.Y. native was instrumental to the Bonnies racing up the team leaderboard.
After opening the tournament with rounds of 73 and 75 on Saturday, he carded a final round three-under 68 last Sunday. He birdied the par-3 fifth, then recorded an eagle on the par-5 sixth to set the tone for his day. Two more birdies along with just one blemish – a bogey on the par-4 14th – completed his stellar round on the 6,904-yard layout. For the week, he finished with a three-over par 216 total to take a tie for 17th in a field of 90 competitors.
Fresh off a strong fourth place finish as a team last weekend, the Bonnies return to action Sept. 25-26 at the George Mason Patriot Intercollegiate in Chantilly, Va.
