NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – St. Bonaventure has swept the weekly Atlantic 10 golf awards as junior Corey Long has earned Golfer of the Week honors while freshman Zach Chaddock received a Rookie of the Week nod.
The awards cap a tremendous week in program history that saw the Bonnies capture both the Little Three Championship as well as the team title at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational.
Long posted a pair of top 10 finishes during the week, pacing the Bonnies in both events. He took home a second place finish at the Little Three Championship, shooting a one-under 70 in the opening round at Springville Country Club before finishing with a 73 for a 143 total as Bona captured its first win over rivals Niagara and Canisius since 2013.
This past weekend, the McDonald, Pa. native opened the tournament held outside Binghamton with an even-par 72 before finishing with a three-under 69, his lowest collegiate round. That showing was good for a tie for ninth on the individual leaderboard in a tournament of 90 competitors as the Bonnies registered a record-setting day on Monday with the lowest team 18-hole and 36-hole totals in program history. Long's showing helped St. Bonaventure to its second victory of the week, topping the tournament field of 16 teams.
For the season, Long has posted a scoring average of 73.38 in five tournaments while recording three top 10 finishes.
Chaddock continued his strong first-season play this week as well, shooting 77-76/153 to come home 10th at the Little Three Championship before shining over the weekend. After a 74 in the first round at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y. on Sunday, he carded a career-best one-under 71 for a 145 36-hole total.
The native of Fillmore has counted in the scoring in all five events this season, boasting a scoring average of 76.54.
This week's Atlantic 10 honor is the third of Long's career – he was named A-10 Rookie of the Week twice during the fall of 2014. For Chaddock, it marks his first A-10 weekly award.
The Bonnies return to action Oct. 16-17 at the Dayton Invitational.
