After helping St. Bonaventure to a pair of road wins, freshman point guard Kyle Lofton has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week.
In wins at UMass and Richmond, Lofton averaged 22.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He made 61 percent of his shots from the field (16-31) including 5-10 from three-point range, helping the Bonnies improve to 4-3 in the Atlantic 10.
In the Bonnies' win at UMass Jan. 23, Lofton bested his prior season high by scoring 24 points as St. Bonaventure won 65-51. Last Saturday, Lofton scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half at the Bonnies topped Richmond 66-57. His perimeter defense was also key to St. Bonaventure holding both opponents under 57 points.
For the season, the Hillside, N.J., native is averaging 14.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He leads the A-10 in minutes played at 38.3 per game, and is second among A-10 freshmen in scoring and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Lofton is the second St. Bonaventure player to earn A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in three weeks. Center Osun Osunniyi was cited for the week ending Jan. 13.
St. Bonaventure (8-12) will host Davidson this Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in a Friday Night A-10 Rivalry Game on ESPN2.
