In their final test of the preseason, St. Bonaventure cruised to a 90-42 exhibition win over Alfred on Friday night at the Reilly Center.
In a game where five Bonnies were playing their first game in the Brown and White, the home team took control with defense. St. Bonaventure held the Saxons to one field goal over game's first 11:54, opening a 16-2 lead. The lead grew to 25-5 by the 6:41 mark of the first half and then to 44-10 by halftime.
In the first 20 minutes, the Bonnies limited Alfred to 3-29 shooting (10 percent). Amadi Ikpeze controlled the paint in the first half with 10 points, 12 rebounds and one block.
In the second half, St. Bonaventure maintained its lead despite Alfred shooting 39 percent in the period. The Bonnies' shooters got hotter in the second half, going 7-12 from three-point range.
Freshman guard Alpha Okoli led five Bonnies in double figures with 20 points. Senior forward LaDarien Griffin finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. He and Ikpeze combined for 27 rebounds as the Bonnies outrebounded Alfred 46-24.
Freshman point guard Kyle Lofton impressed in his first action, scoring 15 points with four assists while making all three of his three-point shots. Fellow freshman Dominick Welch scored all 12 of his points in the second half while Ikpeze ended with 10 points.
Up Next: St. Bonaventure will open the 2018-19 season next Wednesday at home against Bucknell. Game time will be 7:00.
