Behind a record-setting shooting performance by Matt Mobley, St. Bonaventure outlasted Richmond, 83-77, on Friday to advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals. The Bonnies earned their 13th straight win, the second-longest winning streak in the country.
Mobley scored 29 points as he broke the A-10 Tournament record for three-pointers in a game with nine. The all-conference senior guard was 9-12 from beyond the arc.
St. Bonaventure built a 17-point lead early in the second half but had to hold off a furious Richmond rally in the final minutes. Twice in the final 1:21, the Spiders pulled within two points, the last time at 79-77 with 28 ticks left. After Jaylen Adams made one of two free throws, Richmond's Nick Sherrod missed a potential game-tying shot. Adams sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
Courtney Stockard finished with 19 points and five assists while LaDarien Griffin had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The win was the Bonnies' 25th this season, tying the school record set by the 1969-70 Final Four team. It also gave St. Bonaventure its third appearance in the A-10 Tournament semifinals in the last seven years under coach Mark Schmidt.
The Bonnies got off to an uncharacteristic slow start Friday, trailing 19-11 midway through the first half. Stockard made a three-pointer at the 8:11 mark to end what had been a 12-4 Richmond run. Mobley followed with a three-pointer, then Griffin slammed home a Kaputo miss to tie the score at 19.
The Spiders went ahead 24-21, but St. Bonaventure then scored nine of the next 11 points, capped by a Mobley three-pointer with 2:29 left in the opening half, to go in front 30-27. The game was tied at halftime, 32-32.
After the Spiders scored to open the second half, Mobley caught fire. He made three straight three-pointers, the last at the 17:56 mark, to push St. Bonaventure ahead 41-34.
The run didn't stop there, as the Bonnies scored six more points to extend a 15-0 surge that ended with them ahead 47-34 at the 16:30 mark. Mobley added another three-pointer followed by one from Stockard to extend the run to 21-3. Mobley's eighth three-pointer gave the Bonnies their largest lead at 59-42 with 12:11 remaining.
Richmond eventually cut into the Bonnies' lead, pulling within eight at 63-55. However, Ikpeze scored on a hook shot and Griffin added four straight points to push the margin up to 69-55 with 7:58 left.
Mobley broke the A-10 record for three-pointers in a Tournament game with his ninth at the 6:24 mark.
Richmond fought back and pulled within 74-68 on a layup at the 4:20 mark, then got within five points on a three-pointer with 2:27 left as they continued to close the gap.
Adams finished with just five points, tying his season low, but did have six assists. Amadi Ikpeze chipped in nine points and three rebounds.
