A season of nearly unprecedented success added dramatic chapter Tuesday at the Reilly Center, when St. Bonaventure outlasted Davidson 117-113 in triple overtime.
It was nearly 12:20 a.m. when the game finally ended and the Bonnies could revel in their 11th straight win and 23rd victory of the season, a team record for wins in a regular season. St. Bonaventure also took over sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 13-4, a game ahead of Davidson with one game left in the regular season.
In a game with 23 lead changes and 15 ties, St. Bonaventure overcame a four-point deficit in the third OT when it was without three regulars who had fouled out: Jaylen Adams, Courtney Stockard and LaDarien Griffin. Backup point guard Nelson Kaputo tied the game at 108 with three free throws at the 2:36 mark. Following a missed shot by the Wildcats, freshman forward Tshiefu Ngalakulondi gave the Bonnies a 110-108 lead with a dunk off an inbounds play.
Kellan Grady, who was spectacular for Davidson, missed a three-pointer and Matt Mobley made two free throws with 1:07 left to put St. Bonaventure ahead 112-108. Three more Mobley free throws, the last with 30 seconds left, put the Bonnies in control at 115-108.
St. Bonaventure forced the first overtime when Griffin scored on a drive with 4.4 seconds left, banking his shot off the glass to tie the score at 78.
The Bonnies appeared on their way to a win in the first overtime as they led 90-86 with 43 seconds left, but Davidson got a three-pointer by Peyton Aldridge and then, after one free throw by Bonnies guard Idris Taqqee, two free throws by Grady with :03 left to force the second overtime.
Grady once again was the hero for the Wildcats in the second OT, as he made two free throws with 19 seconds left to tie the score at 100. Stockard had a jumper that rimmed out with three seconds remaining.
Stats Of The Game
Three Bonnies topped the 30-point mark, the first time that has happened in a Division I game in the last 20 years: Adams (34), Mobley (33) and Stockard (31). Peyton Aldridge scored 45 for Davidson, which is the most scored by an A-10 player this season, and Grady finished with 39.
Quotes From Coach Mark Schmidt
"That was two really good teams going at each other. One team taking a step back. When one team hit one shot, the other one came back to answer it."
"We got off to a great start. Courtney played extremely well early. There a highly skilled team. Aldridge and Grady are two of the best players in this league and they showed it tonight, but we showed some toughness. There were times in that game at the end where it looked like it was going to go our way. We found a way."
"I told the team after the first overtime that someone's going to have to step up off the bench that hasn't played and we did. We ran the play (in the third OT) and Chef (Ngalakulondi) had a dunk. We made enough plays, especially when Jay went out of the game, when we were shorthanded and in foul trouble.
"It was a great game. A great game to coach. I give kudos out to our community. Without our students here, they rallied around us and they came and they were terrific. We wouldn't have won without them."
"These three seniors will never forget this game for the rest of their lives. It's a special one and I'm glad I was a part of it."
