Slow Start To Second Half Costs Bonnies At Rhode Island

A slow start to the second half cost St. Bonaventure on Saturday as the Bonnies lost at Rhode Island 87-73.

Playing on the home floor of the Atlantic 10's lone unbeaten team in conference play, the Bonnies trailed 42-39 after an evenly played first half. But the Rams seized control with a fast start to the second half. Rhode Island scored 16 of the first 19 points of the half to open a 58-42 lead with less than four minutes played.

From there, the Bonnies were never able to get closer than 11 points. Courtney Stockard made two free throws with 5:18 left to pull Bona to within 71-60, but URI answered with four points to push its edge back to 15.

Jaylen Adams' layup with 1:46 remaining made the score 81-70, but the Bonnies were in foul mode by that point and Rhode Island held on for the win.

Adams and Mobley combined for 38 points as both scored 19. Stockard scored 14 points and tied his season high of nine rebounds. LaDarien Griffin finished with eight points and two blocked shots.

Rhode Island led 12-5 early before the Bonnies got hot, responding with a 17-5 run to take a 22-17 lead. Nelson Kaputo capped the run with a pair of free throws at the 10:51 mark. Kaputo was in the game for Adams, who was called for two charging fouls in the first six minutes.

The Rams tied the game at 24 by the 8:46 mark and later forged ahead 36-30.  Mobley's three-pointer pulled St. Bonaventure back within 40-39 with 2:03 left in the first half.

The loss dropped St. Bonaventure to 12-5 overall and 2-3 in the A-10. Rhode Island is 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Stats of the Game
In the second half, St. Bonaventure made only 10 of 35 field goals and did not connect on a three-pointer. The Rams, conversely, were 13-26 from the field and 18-20 at the free throw line.

Beyond The Boxscore
- The game pitted the top two teams in the A-10's preseason poll. The rematch will be Feb. 13 at the Reilly Center. 

Up Next: St. Bonaventure is idle until next Friday, Jan. 19, when it will travel to Davidson for an A-10 Friday night ESPN2 matchup.
