Bonnies' Comeback Effort Falls Short At Saint Joseph’s

St. Bonaventure dropped a hard-fought 85-78 decision at Saint Joseph's on Saturday night, falling to 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Bonnies fell behind by 17 points early in the second half but rallied to within three late in the game. The Hawks held off the visitors, however, with timely free throws and some key rebounds.

St. Bonaventure (11-4) was led by Jaylen Adams with 19 points. Courtney Stockard finished with 17 points, and Izaiah Brockington scored 16 points in his Philadelphia homecoming. Josh Ayeni added 10. 

The Hawks jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but the Bonnies responded, using back-to-back three-pointers by Izaiah Brockington and Jaylen Adams to tie the score at 19-19.

It stayed close for the rest of the first half. An Adams free throw brought the Bonnies within 37-34 with 1:33 left until halftime, but the Hawks scored five of the last six points to take a 42-35 lead at the break.

The second half was more of the same for the home team as Saint Joseph's scored 11 of the first 13 points to open a 53-37 edge by the 17:51 mark.

St. Bonaventure trailed by as many as 17 points before rallying. Adams made a three-pointer, and later Brockington drilled consecutive three-pointers of his own to cut the deficit down to 64-53 at the 12:48 mark.

The Bonnies continued to chip away at the Hawks' lead, eventually pulling within four at 79-75 on Courtney Stockard's layup with 1:09 left. 

More chances came the Bonnies' way down the stretch, but missed shots and a final turnover cost them a chance to pull even. The Hawks converted four free throws in the final :08.

Stats of the Game
In a game where the stats were very even across the board, the Hawks made two more three-pointers and five more free throws than St. Bonaventure.

Up Next: St. Bonaventure will return home to host Fordham on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Reilly Center. Tipoff will be at 7:00.
