Saturday evening, St. Bonaventure hosts Alfred in its only exhibition game this year. It will be the Bonnies' final tune-up for their season-opener next Friday against Niagara.
The Bonnies' veteran team is led by seniors Jaylen Adams, Matt Mobley and Idris Taqqee. Coach Mark Schmidt also returns forwards LaDarien Griffin, Josh Ayeni and Amadi Ikpeze as well as point guard Nelson Kaputo from last year's 20-12 team. The exhibition will be the first game action for St. Bonaventure's four newcomers – junior forward Courtney Stockard, who missed the last two seasons due to foot injuries, junior forward Ndene Gueye, freshman guard Izaiah Brockington and freshman forward Tshiefu Ngalakulondi.
This is the second year in a row the Bonnies and Saxons have met in an exhibition game. While it marks the Bonnies' final tune-up for a highly-anticipated season, it also will be special for the Schmidt family. Coach Mark Schmidt's two oldest sons, Nick and Derek, both play for Alfred. Nick is a senior and Derek is a sophomore.
The game will tipoff at 7:00, or 30 minutes following the end of the Bonnies' women's exhibition game vs. Edinboro.
All tickets for Saturday's exhibition will be $7 and include admission to the women's game vs. Edinboro which will tip at 5:00. For more details, call the SBU Ticket Office at 716-375-2500 or CLICK HERE.
A member of the NCAA Div. III Empire 8 Conference, Alfred finished 10-15 last season. While leading scorer Tyler Seelman (16 points per game) graduated, the Saxons do return six of their top seven scorers from last season. Sage Brown (9.0 ppg), Tristin Hook (7.9), Dalton Cousin (7.8), Nick Schmidt (7.2) and Scotty Stopera (6.7) were all part of Alfred's rotation last year. Brown, a 6-5 junior, led the team in rebounding with a 6.0 average. Alfred was an effective three-point shooting team last year, making over seven per game from behind the arc.
The Bonnies will open the regular season next Friday, Nov. 10, at home against Big 4 rival Niagara. Tipoff will be at 8:00, or 30 minutes following the women's game vs. Niagara.
