ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior guard Jordan Gathers has announced that he is leaving St. Bonaventure University and will not return to the basketball program.
Gathers had not played this season while continuing to recuperate from hip surgery he underwent last June. He recently completed the requirements for his undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communications.
"We are sorry to see Jordan leave but understand his desire to pursue other opportunities," said St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt. "Jordan has been a good teammate and student over his time with us and I am proud that he earned his degree in three and a half years. We wish him all the best and know he will be successful."
Gathers, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., played in 91 games over his three seasons with the Bonnies, starting 25 times. Last season, he averaged a career-best 8.2 points per game. He also averaged 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Gathers will be best remembered for his game-winning three-pointer against Saint Louis in the quarterfinals of last year's Atlantic 10 Conference tournament in Brooklyn, a shot that was selected No. 1 in ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of that week. Gathers, who is the nephew of the late Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers, also was a member of St. Bonaventure's 2012 A-10 championship team.
