PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A late rally fell short as the St. Bonaventure University baseball team saw Western Michigan take a 3-2 decision on the final day of the Bonnies' spring break trip.
The Broncos (9-6) got on the board first Saturday afternoon when Blake Dunn doubled home Justin McIntyre and Gavin Doyle in the bottom of the third, taking 2-0 lead.
Logan Hudson gave the Broncos an extra insurance run in the inning, scoring Ethan Hajdukovic on a sac fly, extending their lead to 3-0.
The Bonnies (3-4) tried to rally in the top of the eighth when Daniel Manion brought home Matthew Williams on a sac fly, bringing the Bonnies within one, 3-2.
Western Michigan's Jack Huisman closed the door on the Bonnies comeback attempt, working the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.
Kevin Higgins was 3-for-3 on the afternoon to lead the Bonnies while Boldt and Palczewski each had two hits.
Elijah Baez got the start on the mound for the Bonnies, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. Donovan Moffat pitched the final 3.2 innings, fanning four Broncos batters and allowing just one hit with no walks.
The Bonnies head to Salisbury, Maryland to begin a three-game set with Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday.
