ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The 2020 St. Bonaventure baseball schedule features 16 home games and 48 total contests with Opening Day slated for Feb. 21.The home slate kicks off April 1 with a visit from Penn State.
The Bonnies begin the season with a trip to Mount Saint Mary's, a member of the Northeast Conference, for a three-game set with the Mountaineers (Feb. 21-22).
The next road trip brings the annual trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. where the Bonnies will play six games. St. Bonaventure will face Summit League foe North Dakota State for three games (Feb. 28-March 1), Illinois-Chicago of the Horizon League (March 6) and Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan (March 7). Illinois-Chicago is coming off a memorable 2019 season that included their second NCAA Regionals birth in three years after defeating Milwaukee in the Horizon League Championship.
After wrapping up in the Sunshine State, the Bonnies then return to Maryland for a three-game series against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Maryland-Eastern Shore (March 13-15).
The last non-conference tune up before Atlantic 10 play begins will be a mid-week matchup at Youngstown State (Horizon League) on March 18, the first of a home-and-home series this year with the Penguins.
The 24-game A-10 schedule will begin with a trip to VCU (March 20-22). The Bonnies will host George Mason at Fred Handler Park for the conference home opener on April 3-5.
Other conference home series include UMass (April 10-12), Saint Louis (April 24-26), and Rhode Island (May 8-10).
The Bonnies' road conference schedule also features trips to La Salle (March 27-29), Dayton (April 17-19) and Saint Joseph's (May 14-16).
Other non-conference home games include the home opener against Penn State (April 1) followed by the second half of a home-and-home series against Youngstown State (April 14). The Nittany Lions visit Fred Handler Park for the first time since leaving the Atlantic 10 in 1991, though the teams have met in each of the past two seasons in State College.
Little Three rival Niagara visits St. Bonaventure on April 21 and the non-conference home slate closes out with a matchup against Binghamton April 28. Last season, Binghamton was narrowly edged out in the America East Championship game and finished with a 26-24 record.
The Bonnies' other non-conference road trips include Bucknell (Patriot League) on March 25, a doubleheader against Niagara (April 7), a three-game set at Radford (May 2-3), and Little Three rival Canisius (May 6). Radford made it to the Big South Tournament quarterfinals last year and posted an overall record of 30-27. Canisius finished last season with a 17-7 record in the MAAC.
Head coach Larry Sudbrook's squad returns 13 players who saw action last year, including seniors Kevin Higgins (.264, 27 RBIs) and Jeff Palczewski (.358 OBP, 45 starts at third base) as well as juniors Tyler Kelder (.293, nine home runs, 15 doubles, 33 RBIs), Matthew Williams (.258 AVG, 15 RBIs) and Branden Myers (36 starts at shortstop)
On the mound, seniors Donovan Moffat (4-4, 2.58 ERA) and Murphy O'Brien (4-2, 40 strikeouts) return after solid performances last year. Joshua Pittman, Casey Vincent, and Michael Krauza come back with additional experience on the hill. Elijah Baez also returns following an injury after just six appearances last year.
The Bonnies will have numerous games broadcast on ESPN+ once again this year. A complete broadcast schedule will be released after the New Year.
