A pair of St. Bonaventure baseball alumni have earned spots on Minor League All-Star rosters for their performances during the first half of the season. Aaron Phillips will take part in the California League All-Star Game while Steven Klimek will be a part of the Carolina League All-Star Game.
Klimek, who was a 33rd round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 2015, will represent the Frederick Keys, the High A-level affiliate of the Orioles. He will be on the Carolina League North roster after an absolutely outstanding start to the year. The Rochester native had posted a 1.21 ERA over his first 15 appearances and had not surrendered a run over his last 18.2 innings before being named an all-star. For the year he has struck out 30 batters in 31.2 innings and opponents are hitting .195 against him. Klimek pitched three seasons for the Bonnies before being drafted.
The Carolina League All-Star Game will be hosted by the Keys in Frederick, MD on June 18.
Phillips, the ninth round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2017, will represent the San Jose Giants, the organization's High-A affiliate. The California League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 2, Phillips earned the all-star honors and will play for the Cal League's North Division squad after a string of four straight appearances where he went 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA, allowing only three earned runs in 22 innings. For the season, he owns a 4-4 record with a 4.01 ERA in 11 starts, striking out 40 batters in 49.1 innings. The Cheektowaga, N.Y. native played three seasons with the Bonnies before being drafted and was the 2017 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year.
The California League All-Star Game takes place June 18 as well in San Bernadino, Ca.
